Time at Speed of Light

I went to the tailor uncle at Katong Shopping Centre for a minor alteration job. It struck me that uncle’s voice has turned way hoarser than I remember. He wasn’t as swift. His words were few unlike the countless stories of Sino-Viet war he used to share that held Matthew and I up for half an hour.

Time flew by. We age.

A small corner of the shop was filled with pictures of his family. It is absolutely lovely. I assume the kids are the grand-children. The sight of intergeneration is invaluable.

There are things that I promise myself I’ll do differently in my own family. God-centered, love and community.

My son, hear the instruction of your father,
And do not forsake the law of your mother;
For they will be a graceful ornament on your head,
And chains about your neck. - Proverbs

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which theLord your God is giving you. - Exodus

I admire this particular uncle very much. He is definitely a wise person from the stories that I heard from him years back. Altering, sewing and making suits seem to be a nice way of making a decent living. Earlier that same day, I was asked again why would I do sociology. Most want to pursue the practical way; bankers, businessman, lawyer. Careers that will ensure prestige and income. In all honesty, I will conform to it in one way or another anyway. I just do not want to drag myself to work. Whatever happened to passion? No, it is not some elusive ideal.

Life goes on, and God leads on.
